What makes a Christian a Christian? What makes ME a Christian? The answer is not so simple. We see many different churches around us, and many of these churches consider themselves to be “Christian.” And many of these churches disagree about many things. So, it is very useful to ask, “What makes ME a Christian? What must I believe? What are the most fundamental and essential doctrines of MY Christian theology?”

Now as we ask these questions, we need to be very, very clear that individuals can be saved even if they have a poor understanding of theology – what they believe. Our commitment to Christ is sufficient to make us Christians. But at the same time, it is fair to say that there are several fundamental and essential ideas or doctrines that must be present in our belief system before it deserves to be called “Christian”.

Reflection: So, what would be those fundamental and essential ideas or doctrines? What essential ideas or doctrines make ME a Christian? Jot down those ideas.

¿Qué hace que un cristiano sea cristiano? ¿Qué me hace cristiano? La respuesta no es tan simple. Vemos muchas iglesias diferentes a nuestro alrededor, y muchas de estas iglesias se consideran “cristianas”. Y muchas de estas iglesias no están de acuerdo en muchas cosas. Entonces, es muy útil preguntar: “¿Qué me hace cristiano? ¿Qué debo creer? ¿Cuáles son las doctrinas más fundamentales y esenciales de MI teología cristiana?”

Ahora, al hacer estas preguntas, debemos tener muy, muy claro que las personas pueden salvarse incluso si tienen una comprensión pobre de la teología, lo que creen. Nuestro compromiso con Cristo es suficiente para hacernos cristianos. Pero al mismo tiempo, es justo decir que hay varias ideas o doctrinas fundamentales y esenciales que deben estar presentes en nuestro sistema de creencias antes de que merezca ser llamado “cristiano”.
