Introduction to the Apostles’ Creed (Part 8)

“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” Acts 1:8

The church began to spread outward from Judea, and then to Samaria and finally to the ends of the earth. What a beautiful reality! As a result of what happened in the early church, we who live in the ends of the earth enjoy the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

But there is another reality. And that reality can be frustrating. There are so many denominations, so many divisions and so many theological disputes in the modern church. How can I know if a church is truly Christian – truly faithful to the Gospel? What allows me to say “Brother or Sister” to a person in a denomination or church other than mine?

And here is an answer to these questions despite all these types of disunity: there is a common core of belief that all faithful Christians have affirmed throughout history. And for almost two millennia, this core of belief has been summarized in the Apostles' Creed. The Apostles’ Creed brings unity to the Church. The Apostles’ Creed allows us to say “Brother” or “Sister” to Presbyterians, Methodists, Baptists, Anglicans, Lutherans, Assemblies of God and many other groups. Why? Because we all have the same set of core beliefs.

“Pero recibiréis poder cuando venga sobre vosotros el Espíritu Santo; y seréis mis testigos en Jerusalén, en toda Judea, en Samaria, y hasta los confines de la tierra. Hechos 1:8

La iglesia comenzó a extenderse desde Judea, y luego a Samaria y finalmente hasta los confines de la tierra. ¡Qué hermosa realidad! Como resultado de lo que sucedió en la iglesia primitiva, los que vivimos en los confines de la tierra disfrutamos del Evangelio de Jesucristo.

Pero hay otra realidad. Y esa realidad puede ser frustrante. Hay tantas denominaciones, tantas divisiones y tantas disputas teológicas en la iglesia moderna. ¿Cómo puedo saber si una iglesia es verdaderamente cristiana, verdaderamente fiel al Evangelio? ¿Qué me permite decir “hermano o hermana” a una persona en una denominación o iglesia que no sea la mía?

Y aquí hay una respuesta a estas preguntas a pesar de todos estos tipos de desunión: hay un núcleo común de creencias que todos los cristianos fieles han afirmado a lo largo de la historia. Y durante casi dos milenios, este núcleo de creencias se ha resumido en el Credo de los Apóstoles. El Credo de los Apóstoles trae unidad a la Iglesia. El Credo de los Apóstoles nos permite decir "hermano" o "hermana" a los presbiterianos, metodistas, bautistas, anglicanos, luteranos, Asambleas de Dios y muchos otros grupos. ¿Por qué? Porque todos tenemos el mismo conjunto de creencias fundamentales.
