Introduction to the Apostles’ Creed (Part 2)

The churches during the early centuries found the need to answer that question: “What are the fundamental and essential beliefs of a Christian?” And they wrote down those fundamental beliefs in a very useful summary called the Apostles’ Creed. And this is what they wrote:

I believe in God the Father Almighty,

Maker of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,

Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

And born of the Virgin Mary.

He suffered under Pontius Pilate,

Was crucified, died, and was buried;

He descended into hell.

The third day he rose again from the dead.

He ascended into heaven

And is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.

From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

The holy catholic church,

The communion of saints,

The forgiveness of sins,

The resurrection of the body,

And the life everlasting. Amen.

Reflection: Is this what you believe? Does this creed state all the essential doctrines of a person who deserves to be called a “Christian”? And finally, do you understand everything that is written in this creed?

Introducción al Credo de los Apóstoles (Parte 2)

Las iglesias durante los primeros siglos encontraron la necesidad de responder a esa pregunta: "¿Cuáles son las creencias fundamentales y esenciales de un cristiano?" Y escribieron esas creencias fundamentales en un resumen muy útil llamado el Credo de los Apóstoles. Y esto es lo que escribieron:

Creo en Dios Padre Todopoderoso,

Creador del cielo y de la tierra.

Creo en Jesucristo, su único Hijo, Señor nuestro.

Que fue concebido del Espíritu Santo,

Nació de la virgen María,

Padeció bajo el poder de Poncio Pilato;

Fue crucificado, muerto y sepultado;

Descendió a los infiernos;

Al tercer día resucitó de entre los muertos;

Subió al cielo,

Y está sentado a la diestra de Dios Padre Todopoderoso;

Y desde allí ha de venir a juzgar a los vivos y a los muertos.

Creo en el Espíritu Santo,

La Santa Iglesia Universal,

La comunión de los santos,

El perdón de los pecados,

La resurrección del cuerpo,

La vida eterna. Amén.

Reflexión: ¿Es esto lo que crees? ¿Establece este credo todas las doctrinas esenciales de una persona que merece ser llamada “cristiana”? Y finalmente, ¿entiendes todo lo que está escrito en este credo?
