Introduction to the Apostles’ Creed (Part 5)

Suppose we put seven different people in a room. One person is a Presbyterian, another a Catholic, another an Adventist, another a Muslim, another a Buddha priest, another an evolutionist and yet another an atheist. This group of seven is given a task: define the word “truth”. Try to imagine the discussion. Do you think that this group of seven could come up with an answer that all would agree with?

Answer: Highly unlikely. I would even say impossible.

During the early centuries of the church, all kinds of false prophets and false teachings came into the church. Truth was no longer clear, and many persons were confused by all kinds of opposing truth. People started to question their beliefs.

· Is there more than one god?

· Was Jesus actually a human?

· Was Jesus actually God?

· Did Jesus actually die? Did he really resurrect?

· Is the Holy Spirit a person or a force?

· Will my body be resurrected or just my soul?

· Is the church really necessary?

And so, the early church found the need to define truth. And they defined this truth in the Apostles’ Creed.

Reflection: Re-read the Apostles’ Creed. In your opinion, does it define the truth of our beliefs?

Supongamos que ponemos a siete personas diferentes en una habitación. Una persona es presbiteriana, otra católica, otra adventista, otra musulmana, otra un sacerdote de Buda, otra evolucionista y otra atea. Este grupo de siete tiene una tarea: definir la palabra “verdad”. Trate de imaginar la discusión. ¿Crees que este grupo de siete podría llegar a una respuesta con la que todos estarían de acuerdo?

Respuesta: Altamente improbable. Incluso diría imposible.

Durante los primeros siglos de la iglesia, todo tipo de falsos profetas y falsas enseñanzas entraron en la iglesia. La verdad ya no era clara, y muchas personas estaban confundidas por todo tipo de verdades opuestas. La gente comenzó a cuestionar sus creencias.

• ¿Era Jesús realmente un ser humano?

• ¿Era Jesús realmente Dios?

• ¿Jesús realmente murió? ¿Realmente resucitó?

• ¿Es el Espíritu Santo una persona o una fuerza?

• ¿Será resucitado mi cuerpo o sólo mi alma?

• ¿Es realmente necesaria la iglesia?

Y así, la iglesia primitiva encontró la necesidad de definir la verdad. Y definieron esta verdad en el Credo de los Apóstoles.
