3: Life by the Spirit/Vida por el Espíritu

Introduction (Part 3)

Jesus tells us that we are to learn from the Holy Spirit in order to have life. But exactly what must we learn to have life? Galatians 5:13-26 gives us the answer in two ways. On the one hand, it tells us what life is not. On the other hand, it tells us what life is. Let’s read the answer.

Life by the Spirit

13 You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh[a]; rather, serve one another humbly in love. 14 For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”[b] 15 If you bite and devour each other, watch out or you will be destroyed by each other.

16 So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17 For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever[c] you want. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.

19 The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; 20 idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21 and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. 24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. 26 Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other.

So, what is living life by the Spirit? It is living love, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control BECAUSE Jesus Christ, on the cross, gave of us life by His Spirit.

Jesús nos dice que debemos aprender del Espíritu Santo para tener vida. Pero, ¿qué debemos aprender exactamente para tener vida? Gálatas 5:13-26 nos da la respuesta de dos maneras. Por un lado, nos dice lo que no es la vida. Por otro lado, nos dice qué es la vida. Leamos la respuesta.

Las Obras de la Carne y el Fruto del Espíritu

16 Digo, pues: Andad en el Espíritu, y no satisfagáis los deseos de la carne. 17 Porque el deseo de la carne es contra el Espíritu, y el del Espíritu es contra la carne; y estos se oponen entre sí, para que no hagáis lo que quisiereis. 18 Pero si sois guiados por el Espíritu, no estáis bajo la ley. 19 Y manifiestas son las obras de la carne, que son: adulterio, fornicación, inmundicia, lascivia, 20 idolatría, hechicerías, enemistades, pleitos, celos, iras, contiendas, disensiones, herejías, 21 envidias, homicidios, borracheras, orgías, y cosas semejantes a estas; acerca de las cuales os amonesto, como ya os lo he dicho antes, que los que practican tales cosas no heredarán el reino de Dios. 22 Mas el fruto del Espíritu es amor, gozo, paz, paciencia, benignidad, bondad, fe, 23 mansedumbre, templanza; contra tales cosas no hay ley. 24 Pero los que son de Cristo han crucificado la carne con sus pasiones y deseos. 25 Si vivimos por el Espíritu, andemos también por el Espíritu. 26 No nos hagamos vanagloriosos, irritándonos unos a otros, envidiándonos unos a otros.

Entonces, ¿qué es vivir la vida por el Espíritu? Es vivir el amor, la paz, la paciencia, la benignidad, la bondad, la fe, la mansedumbre y el dominio propio PORQUE Jesucristo, en la cruz, nos dio vida por Su Espíritu.
