Jesus (Part 2)

Our desire is to trust in Christ alone. That’s what we reflected upon yesterday. But do we always trust in Christ alone? No! There is a problem that arises often in our churches and in our personal Christian walk. It’s called legalism. And what is legalism? It is the belief that we are saved by Jesus, BUT we add something else.

Imagine that you are sitting in church.

• A man with long hair and old clothes comes in. And you say in your heart, “He CAN’T come here. Look at him. Look at his hair and old clothes.” For you, a Christian is someone who has Jesus PLUS nice clothing.

• A woman comes in. You have heard about her lifestyle. She has several children with several different men. And you say in your heart, “She CAN’T come here. She has children from many different men.” For you, a Christian is someone who has Jesus but has never made the mistake of having more than one man or having children outside of marriage.

This is called legalism. We say that we are saved by Jesus and something else – Jesus plus.

• Or maybe you decided to stay home from church or decided not to partake of the Lord’s Supper. Why? Because you are not as “good” as that other person or because you made a mistake or because your children are disobedient or whatever else you may think up.

You are not saved because you are good. You are not saved because you never made a mistake. You are not saved because your children are obedient. No, you are saved because you believe in Christ alone. It is not by what you do or don’t do. Salvation is not Jesus plus works. It is by grace. It is Jesus alone.

Reflect upon your own thoughts and actions. Are there times when you have added something else to Jesus alone? If so, ask God for forgiveness and a renewed Spirit through Jesus ALONE.

estro deseo es confiar solo en Cristo. Eso es sobre lo que reflexionamos ayer. Pero, ¿confiamos siempre solo en Cristo? ¡No! Hay un problema que surge a menudo en nuestras iglesias y en nuestro caminar cristiano personal. Se llama legalismo. ¿Y qué es el legalismo? Es la creencia de que somos salvos por Jesús, PERO agregamos algo más.

Imagina que estás sentado en la iglesia.

• Entra un hombre con el pelo largo y ropa vieja. Y dices en tu corazón: "Él NO PUEDE venir aquí. Míralo. Mira su cabello y su ropa vieja ". Para ti, un cristiano es alguien que tiene a Jesús MÁS ropa bonita.

• Llega una mujer. Has oído hablada de su estilo de vida. Tiene varios hijos con varios hombres diferentes. Y dices en tu corazón: "Ella NO PUEDE venir aquí. Tiene hijos de muchos hombres diferentes ". Para ti, un cristiano es alguien que tiene a Jesús pero que nunca ha cometido el error de tener más de un hombre o tener hijos fuera del matrimonio.

A esto se le llama legalismo. Decimos que somos salvados por Jesús y algo más: Jesús plus.

• O tal vez decidiste quedarte en casa y no ir a la iglesia o decidiste no participar de la Cena del Señor. ¿Por qué? Porque no eres tan “bueno” como esa otra persona o porque cometiste un error o porque tus hijos son desobedientes o cualquier otra cosa que se te ocurra.

No eres salvo porque eres bueno. No eres salvo porque nunca cometiste un error. No eres salvo porque tus hijos son obedientes. No, eres salvo porque crees solo en Cristo. No es por lo que haces o no haces. La salvación no es Jesús más obras. Es por gracia. Es solo Jesús.

Reflexione sobre tus propios pensamientos y acciones. ¿Hay momentos en los que le ha añadido algo más a solo Jesús? Si es así, pídale perdón a Dios y un Espíritu renovado a través de SOLO Jesús.
