God (Part 1)

In the beginning, God…. (Genesis 1:1)

I remember a time when I had the opportunity to talk with a small child. I asked her some very basic questions.

I asked, “Who made you?”

And she responded, “God.”

“Who gave you food?” I said.

“God,” she said.

“Where did your shirt come from?”

“God.”

It seemed that, for the child, the answer to all of life’s questions was God. And although it sounded strange to hear the same answer over and over again, the child was actually right.

Our belief in God is fundamental to our belief about everything else. God is at the center, and everything that we experience revolves around Him. This child’s God-centered thinking is totally opposite to the way of thinking that’s usual in our culture, which is self-centered, me-centered, and then concerned with how everything else, including God himself, relates to me.

And that is totally contrary to the Bible’s way of looking at things. It is totally contrary to God’s own way of looking at things, as Scripture reveals it. So, as we live, as we do ministry in the church, it’s very important to challenge our self-centeredness, which is so natural to us, and to try and put God in the center of our way of thinking – our worldview.

Creo en Dios

En el principio, Dios…. (Génesis 1:1)

Recuerdo una vez que tuve la oportunidad de hablar con una niña pequeña. Le hice algunas preguntas muy básicas.

Le pregunté: "¿Quién te hizo?"

Y ella respondió: “Dios”.

“¿Quién te dio comida?” Yo dije.

"Dios", dijo ella.

"¿De dónde vino tu camisa?"

"Dios."

Parecía que, para la niña, la respuesta a todas las preguntas de la vida era Dios. Y aunque sonaba extraño escuchar la misma respuesta una y otra vez, la niña en realidad tenía razón.

Nuestra creencia en Dios es fundamental para nuestra creencia en todo lo demás. Dios está en el centro, y todo lo que experimentamos gira en torno a Él. El pensamiento centrado en Dios de esta niña es totalmente opuesto a la forma de pensar habitual en nuestra cultura, que es egocéntrica, centrada en mí y luego preocupada por cómo todo lo demás, incluido Dios mismo, se relaciona conmigo.

Y eso es totalmente contrario a la forma en que la Biblia ve las cosas. Es totalmente contrario a la forma en que Dios ve las cosas, como lo revela la Escritura. Entonces, mientras vivimos, mientras ministramos en la iglesia, es muy importante desafiar nuestro egocentrismo, que es tan natural para nosotros, y tratar de poner a Dios en el centro de nuestra forma de pensar, nuestra cosmovisión.
