15 An Effective High Priest/Un Sumo Sacerdote Eficaz

Jesus’ Work (Part 5)

Besides giving God the Son the legal right to be the Davidic king, the incarnation gave him the mercy and sympathy he needed in order to be an effective high priest on behalf of his people.

The Bible tells us that Jesus’ incarnation made him a high priest who is able to be touched with the feeling of our infirmities. And that means that he is a more effective high priest than he would have been or could have been had he not known the fullness of what it is to be human and experience humanity with us and for us. There are a variety of ways that that’s manifested. One is that Jesus in his own life and experience dealt with and encountered the same range of human problems in the fallen world that we do, that God in the flesh knows the same kind of heartaches and sorrows and disappointments and betrayals and wounds that anyone who lives in this fallen world experiences. This is not something theoretical to him, this is not something that he stood off in the deep bowels of space, in the dusty past of eternity and speculated about. It’s something that he came into the world in our poor flesh, in our poor blood and experienced himself. — Dr. J Ligon Duncan III

The author of Hebrews discussed this aspect of the incarnation in Hebrews 2:17- 18. Listen to what he wrote there:

[Jesus] had to be made like his brothers in every way, in order that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God … Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted (Hebrews 2:17-18).

Un Sumo Sacerdote Eficaz

Además de dar a Dios Hijo el derecho legal de ser el rey davídico, la encarnación le dio la misericordia y la simpatía que necesitaba para ser un sumo sacerdote eficaz en favor de su pueblo.

La Biblia nos dice que la encarnación de Jesús lo convirtió en un sumo sacerdote capaz de compadecerse de nuestras dolencias. Y eso significa que es un sumo sacerdote más eficaz de lo que habría sido o podría haber sido si no hubiera conocido la plenitud de lo que es ser humano y experimentar la humanidad con nosotros y por nosotros. Eso se manifiesta de varias maneras. Una de ellas es que Jesús, en su propia vida y experiencia, trató y se encontró con la misma gama de problemas humanos en el mundo caído que nosotros, que Dios en la carne conoce el mismo tipo de angustias y penas y decepciones y traiciones y heridas que experimenta cualquiera que vive en este mundo caído. Esto no es algo teórico para él, esto no es algo que se quedó en las profundas entrañas del espacio, en el pasado polvoriento de la eternidad y especuló. Es algo que vino al mundo en nuestra pobre carne, en nuestra pobre sangre y experimentó él mismo. - Dr. J Ligon Duncan III

El autor de Hebreos trató este aspecto de la encarnación en Hebreos 2:17- 18. Escuchen lo que escribió allí:

Por lo cual [Jesus] debía ser en todo semejante a sus hermanos, para venir a ser misericordioso y fiel sumo sacerdote en lo que a Dios se refiere, para expiar los pecados del pueblo. 18 Pues en cuanto él mismo padeció siendo tentado, es poderoso para socorrer a los que son tentados. (Hebreos 2:17-18).
