Jesus’s Work (Part 1)

For the last few hundred years, it has been common for theologians to talk about the work of Jesus in terms of two ideas – humiliation and exaltation.

First, there is his humiliation, in which he humbled himself by condescending to take on a weak human nature, and to suffer on earth in order to redeem fallen humanity.

Here are some questions: Why would a king want to become a servant? Why would a CEO of a company want to clean the company toilets? Why would an all-powerful, all-knowing, all-present God want to become a man?

It makes no sense for a king or a CEO to humiliate himself by becoming a servant or a toilet cleaner. And it especially makes no sense for God to humiliate Himself by becoming a man. But yet God did HUMILIATE Himself and became a man. This helps us understand the term “humiliation”.

Second, there is his exaltation, in which God the Father unveiled Christ’s hidden divine glory, and heaped additional honor and praise on him.

Here are some questions: What kind of party would you throw for a servant? What kind of party would you throw for a king? What kind of party would you throw for the Christ – the Messiah, the Savior of the world?

It doesn’t make sense to throw a party for a servant, at least not a big one. However, it does makes sense to throw a very big party for a king. And then it makes even more sense to throw a super, super big party for the King of kings – the Christ, the Messiah, the Savior of the world. God EXALTED Jesus – He throw the biggest party ever for His son Jesus. This helps us understand the term “exaltation”.

These two categories humiliation and exaltation are not explicitly mentioned in the Apostles’ Creed, but they are very helpful ways for us to think about the work of Jesus.

As we consider Jesus’ work, we will turn first to his humiliation, those things that hid or veiled his glory. And second, we will consider his exaltation, the work that revealed his glory and that will result in further glory in the future.

Humillación y Exaltación

La Obra de Jesús (Parte 1)

En los últimos cientos de años, ha sido común que los teólogos hablen de la obra de Jesús en términos de dos ideas: humillación y exaltación.

En primer lugar, está su humillación, en la que se humilló a sí mismo al condescender a asumir una débil naturaleza humana, y a sufrir en la tierra para redimir a la humanidad caída.

He aquí algunas preguntas: ¿Por qué querría un rey convertirse en siervo? ¿Por qué un director general de una empresa querría limpiar los baños de la empresa? ¿Por qué un Dios todopoderoso, omnisciente y omnipresente querría hacerse hombre?

No tiene sentido que un rey o un director general se humillen convirtiéndose en un siervo o en un limpiador de baños. Y especialmente no tiene sentido que Dios se humille haciéndose hombre. Pero, sin embargo, Dios se HUMILLÓ y se hizo hombre. Esto nos ayuda a entender el término "humillación".

En segundo lugar, está su exaltación, en la que Dios Padre desveló la gloria divina oculta de Cristo, y acumuló honor y alabanza adicionales sobre él.

He aquí algunas preguntas: ¿Qué tipo de fiesta harías para un siervo? ¿Qué tipo de fiesta harías para un rey? ¿Qué tipo de fiesta harías para el Cristo, el Mesías, el Salvador del mundo?

No tiene sentido hacer una fiesta para un siervo, al menos no una grande. Sin embargo, sí tiene sentido hacer una fiesta muy grande para un rey. Y entonces tiene aún más sentido hacer una fiesta súper, súper grande para el Rey de reyes - el Cristo, el Mesías, el Salvador del mundo. Dios EXALTA a Jesús - Hace la fiesta más grande para su hijo Jesús. Esto nos ayuda a entender el término "exaltación".

Estas dos categorías, humillación y exaltación, no se mencionan explícitamente en el Credo de los Apóstoles, pero son formas muy útiles de pensar en la obra de Jesús.

Al considerar la obra de Jesús, nos centraremos primero en su humillación, en las cosas que ocultaron o velaron su gloria. Y en segundo lugar, consideraremos su exaltación, la obra que reveló su gloria y que dará lugar a una mayor gloria en el futuro.
